Find the rating and the airline policy

Locate the watt-hour rating on the power bank and compare it with the operating airline's current policy for every flight. Do not rely only on the large milliamp-hour number in the product name. If the rating cannot be established clearly, ask the manufacturer and airline before traveling rather than trying to persuade staff at the gate.

FAA guidance places spare lithium-ion batteries and power banks in carry-on baggage, with capacity-related restrictions. The commonly relevant threshold is 100 watt-hours; larger permitted categories may require approval. Airlines can impose tighter limits, including restrictions on use or charging aboard. Check the actual carrier rather than interpreting general guidance as permission for your particular device.

Keep it removable and protected

Pack the power bank where you can remove it if your cabin bag is taken for gate checking. Do not bury it in the middle of clothing and forget it when staff ask you to surrender the suitcase. Protect it from damage and short circuits, following its manufacturer's instructions and the airline's requirements.

Inspect the device before departure. Do not travel with a damaged, swollen, recalled or unusually hot battery. If it behaves abnormally during a flight, alert the crew promptly and follow their directions. A pouch can organize the equipment, but it does not make an unsafe battery suitable for travel.

Choose capacity around the day

Estimate how you use your phone: navigation, photography and a bright screen can consume more power than occasional messages. A smaller bank that covers an ordinary outing may be more useful than a heavy model you leave in the hotel. Check that the cable and output are compatible with the device you intend to charge.

Charge the bank before leaving and keep a dependable wall charger for overnight use. Avoid building a schedule that depends on finding a seat with a working outlet. Save essential tickets and directions in an accessible offline form as well, so a depleted battery does not leave the entire plan unavailable. Recheck carrier rules before each new trip because battery policies can change.
