Begin with a short old-town circuit
Cours Saleya, Place Rossetti and the lanes between them create a manageable first introduction to Vieux-Nice. Take time to look above shop level at shutters, facades and the shape of the streets. The neighborhood is busy and lived in, so keep narrow passages clear when stopping. Market activity varies by day and hour; if shopping is the purpose of your visit, check the current schedule rather than treating a market name as an all-day attraction.
Continue toward Place Garibaldi if you want a clear northern reference point, or return to the sea for a change of space. You do not need to see every lane. A short circuit that ends near a place to sit often gives a better impression than repeatedly retracing your steps while following a long list of food recommendations.
Choose your height
Castle Hill sits between the old town and the port. Despite the name, visitors go for a park and views rather than an intact castle. The ascent changes the effort of an otherwise relatively gentle waterfront day. Investigate the available lift and access arrangements if steps are unsuitable, without assuming that a lift is always operating or eliminates every uneven section.
The view helps explain Nice's layout: the curve of the bay on one side, roofs below and the harbor on the other. Allow time to descend before a timed booking. In wet or windy conditions, keep the visit flexible and use a lower-level route instead of pushing through poor footing for a photograph.
A promenade is not a distance challenge
Select a section of the Promenade des Anglais that suits your energy and accommodation location. The sea is the attraction; completing a long out-and-back walk adds little if you become tired halfway. Separate pedestrian and cycle space, and move off the main flow before taking pictures. A coastal breeze can make a light layer useful even when the old streets feel warm.
Nice's shore is pebbly, so a beach break feels different from lying on soft sand. Check conditions before entering the water and do not leave valuables unattended. For a rainy afternoon, choose an indoor cultural visit and preserve the old-town meal you had planned. Staying within Nice can give a short trip more substance than spending each day in transit to another Riviera town.
