Map the last ten minutes

Look beyond the straight-line distance from the station. A short route may involve several flights of steps, a steep street or a pedestrian area with irregular paving. Check the entrance location and ask about stairs inside the building. A suitcase that is easy to roll for a mile may still be awkward to lift repeatedly for a few hundred yards.

If arrival involves a long walk, consider whether a bus, taxi or luggage drop would change the calculation. That is not an argument for buying more luggage; it is a reminder to choose for the journey you will actually make. A lighter packed load helps whenever rolling stops being possible.

Compare handling, not only wheel count

Four-wheel cases can move beside you on level surfaces, which is useful in queues and wide concourses. Two-wheel designs are normally pulled behind. Neither arrangement guarantees good behavior on broken paving. Wheel size, placement, construction and the weight inside all affect the experience.

Try a loaded case if the retailer allows it. Test turns, a doorway threshold and the transition from upright rolling to pulling. Check that the telescoping handle does not make your wrist bend awkwardly. A wheel mounted far outside the shell may add to overall dimensions and can be exposed to knocks, so include it when measuring airline limits.

Plan for carrying and maintenance

A comfortable side handle becomes important when climbing stairs or lifting the case into storage. Test whether you can grip it securely without trapping your fingers against the shell. If you cannot lift the packed case safely, reduce the load or change the journey arrangement rather than expecting a stranger to handle it.

After walking through grit or wet streets, inspect the wheels and let the case dry before storage. Follow the maker's cleaning instructions and check whether replacement wheels are available before a future purchase. A case with repairable parts may be worth considering if you travel frequently, but a warranty is not a guarantee that a repair will be available during a trip.
