Saturday: begin low, then choose one climb
Start in Rossio and walk through Baixa toward Praça do Comércio. Use the open riverfront to orient yourself before committing to the hillside. Have a coffee or early meal in the lower center, with your main luggage already stored. This first segment works without a reservation and lets you adjust to arrival fatigue instead of beginning with the steepest streets.
For the afternoon, travel toward the Alfama viewpoints by a route that suits your mobility. Choose Santa Luzia or Portas do Sol as the principal stop, then explore a modest stretch of nearby lanes. Descending gradually toward the river can be easier to organize than repeatedly climbing between saved map pins, though steps and paving still need care. Finish with dinner on this side or near your accommodation rather than crossing town for another neighborhood.
Sunday: one main visit in Belém
Travel west to Belém using the current transport planner and the entrance location for your chosen attraction. Select one main interior visit, such as a museum or monument, and confirm its admission arrangements before the weekend. Do not place several timed bookings back to back; the district's exterior spaces and waterfront deserve time too.
After the visit, take a waterfront interval and lunch before returning toward the center. If your departure is that evening, build in time to collect luggage and make the station or airport journey. The plan does not depend on reaching every Belém landmark. A closed interior or long queue should lead to a smaller visit, not an increasingly hurried race along the river.
Adjust the order without losing the shape
If Sunday's forecast is much better, keep the exposed waterfront for then; if Saturday is wet, shorten the Alfama lanes and choose an indoor stop in the lower center. Protect any fixed reservation and move only the flexible pieces. Do not assume that a historic lift or tram will operate exactly as an old guide describes.
The useful constraint is one major geographic change each day. Saturday gives the relationship between lower streets and hills; Sunday shows a western riverside district. Leaving Chiado, extra viewpoints and an out-of-town excursion off this particular schedule is intentional. It allows time for meals, imperfect weather and a street you unexpectedly want to explore.
